Ubuntu – Linux Desktop Hot Keys – Part 1

In: Key Strokes| Linux

Ok, so I really have wanted to move to a linux desktop for a long time, but I haven’t done it.  One of the main reasons is the speed that windows gives me on my laptop with keystrokes.  All the die hards have told me that I can make “anything” that I wanted happen with a linux desktop but of course, that takes time.  Well, I’m on the desktop now and I’m going to document my keystroke struggle here.

The first thing that made me crazy was not being able to minimize all my windows and hit the desktop with a keystroke.  That was a quick google search for the build in ctrl + alt + d  ..  It’s a 3 button move that’s not really natural (all 3 on the same hand) so if I can find a way to change that I’m gonna.

All the normal window control keystrokes are here which is making it much more natural then the last time I attempted to switch.  alt + space brings down a window control menu and all commands are underlined so you can walk your way through whatever you need.  Alt + space then N minimizes to get window out of your way,  Alt + space then X maximizes your window and of course, alt tab gets your moving through your open windows.

All in all, I’m pleasantly surprised thus far.  I’m going to take a spin through the ole windoze box tomorrow and try to remember what else I’m going to miss.  Stay tuned for Part 2.

KeyStroke Summary

Show Desktop: Ctrl+Alt+D
Open window control menu: Alt+Space
Minimize current window: Alt+Space, then N
Maximize current window: Alt+Space, then X
Rotates through open apps: Alt+Tab
